“Everything has a crack in it; that’s how the light gets in.” Leonard Cohen

Lent, the forty days before Easter, is a season for exercising, with a heightened level of intention, the practices of faith. Not because God demands it of us, but because we need it. We need to remember, from time to time, that we can put ourselves in a place where grace can happen, a posture that opens us to be dazzled by a moment of spiritual insight. Lent is that season.

Shoes for Sierra Leone

During the month of January, shoes will be collected to send to Sierra Leone. We are asking that you donate new or gently-used shoes for children between the ages of 5 and 14, and are hoping to get 300 pairs. The shoes will be shipped in barrels at the end of 2015. Pastor Daniel hopes to be in Sierra Leone to attend their Annual Conference, at which time he will make sure that the shoes which have been shipped previously have been distributed to the appropriate schools.

Tuesdays With Morrie

On Sunday, February 22nd, at 2:00 p.m., the Fifty Plus Group will go to see “Tuesdays with Morrie” at the Tabard Theatre in downtown San Jose. This off-Broadway hit stars James Creer as journalist Mitch Albom, whose college mentor was Morrie Schwartz. Sixteen years after Mitch’s graduation, what starts as a simple visit to his old mentor, who is dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease, turns into a weekly pilgrimage and a last class in the meaning of life. An old man, a young man, and life’s greatest lesson. Bob Renfer has reserved 25 tickets at $28 each. For those interested, a group will go to dinner after the show. Sign up today!
